Cori Mathis

Dr. Cori Mathis is a consultant, facilitator, and educator with over 15 years of experience in secondary and collegiate classrooms. She holds a Ph.D. in English with a concentration in Popular Culture from Middle Tennessee State University, an M.A. in English Literature from Auburn University, and a B.A. in English from the University of South Alabama. As a professor, Cori has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in critical media studies, composition, literature, and pedagogy. The former director of both an intercultural education program and a writing center, Cori believes strongly in the power of language and conversation to build bridges and relationships. She is committed to helping education professionals increase equity, access, and belonging in academic spaces at all levels and puts her passion for culturally responsive environments into practice through consulting and volunteer work for academic organizations.

In her spare time, Cori can often be found thinking through her next writing project, which typically centers on questions of genre, form, ideology, and representation in teen television and its intersections with other popular culture genres typically directed to women; her most recent publication was as lead editor for an interdisciplinary edited collection on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for Lexington Books. Cori enjoys traveling and believes that the best way to get to know a place is to simply take a walk--and perhaps go shopping at locally owned stores, so she tries to pick up a Christmas ornament from every place she visits. She also loves to read and keeps a running list of used bookstores to patronize. Cori is from north Alabama but has made her home in Nashville, TN, where she loves trying new restaurants, seeing films, and spending time
with friends and family.
